Nuclear Reactor Detection and Measurement with Professor, Dr. Sukesh Aghara

3-credits, Summer 2020 UMass Lowell Course

Travel May 23 - June 06, 2020 with Dr. Sukesh Aghara to Budapest, Hungary for a two-week program which will include classroom study, hands-on-experiments and visits to nuclear facilities and cultural sites!

Hosted at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, students will perform several experiments and conduct research using a research reactor on campus!

Program Description: Students will have access to perform several experiments and conduct research using a research reactor on campus. Devises such as proportional counters, solid state and scintillator detectors and reactor sources will be used to perform your experiments.

  • ENGY.4060, Nuclear Reactor Detection and Measurement, 3-credits.
    • Pre-Requisite: ENGY.3310 Fundamentals of Nuclear Science & Engineering.
  • Open to Graduate & Undergraduate students.
  • May satisfy an Arts & Humanities Breath of Knowledge Requirement
  • May satisfy an Honors Impactful Experience
  • May satisfy River Hawk Experience Distinction
Housing: Double or quad rooms with shared bathrooms, dormitory of host university within 15minutes to campus via public transportation

  • Program Fee: $2900.00
    • Billed to the student's SiS account during the normal billing schedules for the term the course is registered.
    • Includes: Pre/post travel orientation meal, accommodations, ground transportation while in Budapest, most meals, academic materials and experiment fees, international insurance and cultural activities (see Budapest.Info Session 2020 document above for list). 
    • Not Included: Round-trip airfare, weekend meals, personal spending.
      • Note: Students will be provided a suggested itinerary to encourage the group to travel together. Itinerary to be shared in late March.

  • The Francis College of Engineering offers a travel grant opportunity.
  • Awards are disbursed to the student's SiS account during the normal disbursement schedules for the term the course is registered. Typically after add/drop.
